| COMPETITIVE RESEARCH | | Additional 4.5 Million Francs to USI Researchers from the Swiss National
Science Foundation (SNF) A highly respectable result for our researchers at the SNF, one of the most reputed Swiss institution in the promotion of scientific research, which selects on a competitive base the best projects and finances them. A valuable engine of the October session has been the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), which alone obtained about half of the funds. Remarkable is the overall solidity of our four Faculties with a success rate of 68% per project and 61% per funding, that is, a higher percentage compared to SNF average. | | INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN BIOMEDICINE (IRB) | | Discovered Switch that Regulates Inflammation: IRB study published yesterday in Nature In a study published yesterday in Nature, a research team conducted by PhD Federica Sallusto (photo aside) described for the first time two types of Th17 cells in humans. These immune system cells
possess powerful weapons to counteract a microorganism invasion, but are also able to cause collateral damage. In particular Th17 lymphocytes, named after Interleukin 17 which they produce, are crucial to protect against fungi and bacteria, but can also cause chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Guided by the Faculty's Researchers, the students worked on several
projects conceived to show the discipline's relevance and centrality in the modern economic and social context. Image Gallery. | | TEC-LAB: C@USI. CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS AT USI | | The
