Il numero di studenti, anche quelli di origine internazionale, resta stabile nonostante il superfranco. Rimangono buoni anche i dati sull'inserimento professionale dei laureati

Nel semestre autunnale 2011 risultano iscritti all'USI complessivamente 2866 studenti, 14 in più dello scorso anno. Resta stabile il numero di iscritti a tutte le Facoltà e, nonostante la forza del franco svizzero, rimane molto alta l'internazionalità con il 27.8% degli studenti proveniente dal Ticino, l'8.5% da altri cantoni svizzeri, il 37.9% dall'Italia e il 25.8% da altre nazioni. Per ciò che concerne l'occupazione dei nostri laureati, l'indagine 2011 delinea un quadro stabile e positivo: il 95.5% risulta occupato ad un anno dal diploma (di questi lavora il 68.5%, il 25.2% studia e l'1.8% ha fatto altre scelte), mentre a 5 anni dalla laurea la percentuale sale al 96.6% (di questi lavora il 91.5% e il 5.1% ha fatto altre scelte).

Approvate tre promozioni accademiche, una nomina e il preventivo per il 2012

Il Consiglio dell'USI, la massima autorità su questioni di gestione accademica e amministrativa, nella sua seduta del 2 dicembre ha promosso a professore di ruolo i proff. assistenti Daniela Mondini, prof. di Storia dell'arte presso l'Accademia di architettura, e Mario Jametti, prof. di Economia politica nella Facoltà di scienze economiche. Il Consiglio ha inoltre promosso professore assistente senior Suzanne Suggs, prof. di Social Marketing nella Facoltà di scienze della comunicazione. La Dr.ssa Sara Garau (attualmente ricercatrice presso l'Istituto di italianistica dell'Università di Basilea) è stata nominata professore-assistente di Letteratura italiana nella Facoltà di scienze della comunicazione, Istituto di studi italiani. Il Consiglio dell'Università ha infine approvato il preventivo per il 2012, che ammonta a 84 milioni di franchi.

Il professor Lomi nominato Life-Long member del Clare Hall College dell'Università di Cambridge

Il Clare College, fondato nel 1326, è una delle istituzioni accademiche più antiche e prestigiose del Regno Unito. La nomina permetterà al professor Lomi di dedicarsi alla cura di un volume sui modelli di decisioni organizzative al quale contribuiscono i maggiori studiosi internazionali in questo campo, che comprende economisti, sociologi e psicologi del lavoro. L'opera sarà presentata nel corso dell'anno accademico 2012-2013 nell'ambito di una conferenza internazionale che si terrà sul Campus di Lugano e che vedrà la partecipazione di ricercatori da tutto il mondo.

Un team di studenti della nostra Facoltà di scienze informatiche vince l'International UBI Challenge

Il team - composto da Nemanja Memarovic, Ivan Elhart, Thomas Selber, Matteo Bellan e Andrea Michelotti, sotto la supervisione del prof. Marc Langheinrich - ha vinto con il progetto FunSquare, un innovativo servizio fruibile su schermi pubblici basato su contenuti autogenerati e autopoietici assemblati dinamicamente. Il concorso si è tenuto a Oulu in Finlandia e il riconoscimento è stato consegnato la scorsa settimana a Pechino nel contesto della decima International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia.

Ancora due seminari MORSE prima della pausa natalizia

I due seminari si terranno martedì 20 dicembre e giovedì 22 dicembre: entrambi avranno luogo alle 12.30, in aula 250. Il primo seminario , dal titolo Fitting in: category spanning, status, and interfirm mobility among international law firms in Hong Kong 1998-2008 vedrà protagonista Nathan Betancourt (Erasmus University Rotterdam). Il secondo appuntamento è intitolato Industry-Level Variability of Learning Outcomes from the Accumulation of Implementation Experience with an Administrative Innovation e avrà come relatore Andreas Schwab (Iowa State University).

Giornate della scienza e della tecnica applicate nello sport

La manifestazione, aperta a tutto il pubblico interessato, si terrà dal 18 al 20 gennaio presso lo stabile Gottardo del Centro sportivo nazionale della gioventù (CST) di Tenero. Atelier avvincenti e innovativi permetteranno di scoprire le ultime novità scientifiche e tecnologiche applicate in ambito sportivo. La Facoltà di scienze informatiche sarà presente con il progetto Piattaforme virtuali e visualizzazioni 3D sviluppato dallo studente Teseo Schneider sotto la supervisione del prof. K. Hormann.

Dopo il successo dello scorso anno, a febbraio riapre all'USI il salone di orientamento agli studi universitari del Canton Ticino

L'8 e il 9 febbraio il Campus di Lugano ospiterà per la seconda volta OrientaTI, che vedrà la partecipazione di circa 1200 liceali ticinesi e di quasi tutte le università svizzere che animeranno le due giornate con conferenze e presentazioni relative al proprio ateneo. Saranno protagonisti anche gli studenti dell'USI: quelli di architettura grazie all'esposizione dei loro modelli e quelli di informatica grazie agli innovativi progetti da loro sviluppati. La manifestazione è organizzata dall'Ufficio cantonale dell'orientamento scolastico e professionale (UOSP), dall'Ufficio dell'insegnamento medio superiore (UIMS) e dal Servizio orientamento USI.

In the Autumn 2011 Semester, USI served a total of 2866 students -14 more than last year. The number of registered students remains stable together with the number of registered international students (27.8% originating from Ticino, 8.5% from other Swiss Cantons, 37.9% from Italy and the remaining 25.8% from other countries). Regarding occupation of our graduates, the 2011 survey shows a stable and positive picture: 95.5% found an occupation within a year from graduation (68.5% work professionaly, 25.2% are studying, and 1.8% made other choices). The percentage of students who found an occupation within 5 years from graduation rose to 96.6% (91.5% work, 5.1% made other choices).

Granted Three Academic Promotions, a Nomination and approved Budget for the Year 2012

During its last sitting which took place on 2 December, the USI Council, the highest authority on matters regarding academic management and administration, promoted to Tenured Professor, Assistant Art Professor Daniela Mondini of the Academy of Architecture and Assistant Professor in Economics Mario Jametti. The Council also promoted to Senior Assistant Professor Suzanne Suggs, a Social Marketing Professor for the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Ph.D. Sara Garau (currently working as a researcher at the Istituto di italianistica of the University of Basel) has been nominated Assistant Professor of Italian Literature for the Faculty of Communication Science, Institute of Italian Studies. The Council has at last approved the 2012 budget for a total amount of 84 million Swiss Francs.

Professor Lomi appointed Life-Long member of Clare Hall College, University of Cambridge

Founded in 1326 Clare's College is one of United Kingdom's most ancient and prestigious academic institutions. Thanks to this appointment, Professor Lomi will devote his time to the editing of a volume about organizational decision making models. A work that has seen the cooperation of renown scholars in many fields of expertise (economists, sociologists, pshycologists). The finished work will be presented during the academic year 2012-2013 during an international conference that will be held on Lugano Campus with the participation of researchers from all over the world.

A Team of Students from the Faculty of Informatics wins the International UBI Challenge

A team of researchers formed by - Nemanja Memarovic, Ivan Elhart, Thomas Selber, Matteo Bellan and Andrea Michelotti, under the supervision of Professor Marc Langheinrich, won first prize with the FunSquare service. The project is based on self-generative autopoiesic content assembled dynamically by matching real-time context streams with existing content fragments into localised "fun facts". The contest took place in Oulu Finland and the award was presented last week in Beijing during the 10th International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia.

Coming up before the Holidays, two MORSE Seminars

The two Seminars will be held on Tuesday 20 December at 12.30pm and on Thursday 22 December 12.30pm both in Room 250 of Lugano Campus. Three Days of Science and Technology applied to Sports

The event, open to the public, will take place from 18 to 20 January in Tenero at the Stabile Gottardo in the National Sport Center premises. Engaging and innovative workshops will uncover science and technology latest findings applied to the field of sports. On that occasion, the Faculty of Informatics will present the project "Visual Platforms and 3D Visualization" devoloped by the student Teseo Schneider under the supervision of Professor K. Hormann.

After last Year's Success, the USI Orientation Workshop on University Studies in Canton Ticino will reopen in February

From 8 to 9 February the Lugano Campus will host for the second year OrientaTI. Two days of activities that will see the partecipation of 1200 local high school students and the presence of almost all Swiss universities that will liven up the event with conferences and presentations about their own instituitions. On this occasion USI students will play lead by organizing two exhibitions: one that will show models created by students of the Academy of Architecture and the other one that will display innovative projects developed by the students of the Faculty of Informatics. The event is organised by the Ufficio cantonale dell'orientamento scolastico e professionale (UOSP), USI Study Advisory Service and the Office of Secondary School Instruction.
