| WELCOME! | | USI warmly welcomes more than 500 new students, 6 professors and 6 staff members
With the start of the new academic year, USI welcomes all new students and five tenured professors who started their activities at our university: Walter Angonese (Architectural Design), Vincenzo Galasso (Public Economics), Annegret
Hannawa (Health Communication), Sonia Hildebrand (History of Architecture), Antonio Mele (Finance) and Stefan Wolf (Informatics). We also extend our
welcome to six new staff members: Silvia Bassani (Library Assistant, University Library of Lugano), Ilaria Bernasconi (Receptionist, Academy
of Architecture), Diana D’Andrea (Executive Secretary, Academy of Architecture), Marco Della Torre (Executive Coordinator, Academy of Architecture), Ludovica Domenichelli (Media and Communication Service staff member) and Svetlana Ivanovic (Informatics Services staff member). | | The SWISS "NOBEL" | | Prof. Michele Parrinello recipient of the 2011 Benoist Prize The board of the Marcel Benoist Foundation awarded the Marcel Benoist Prize 2011 to Michele Parrinello, Professor at USI and at ETH Zurich. The Benoist Prize, considered to be the "Swiss Nobel", is the greatest scientific recognition in Switzerland. Parrinello receives this prestigious award for his work on computer modelling in the field of
molecular dynamics. The award will be conferred by Federal Counsellor Didier Burkhalter, President of the Marcel Benoist Foundation and head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs, during the official ceremony. The event will be held Monday, November 28 at 10am in Aula Magna, on the Lugano Campus. More information.
| | THE ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE | | Mario Botta returns to head the Academy of Architecture and presents the new public lecture series, "Mare Nostrum" Architect Mario Botta assumed leadership of the Academy on September first, succeeding Valentin Bearth, who has reached the end of his term. During the press conference, the new Director presented the public event calendar for the
2011-2012 academic year, which includes, in particular, the "Mare Nostrum" lecture series, supported by a contribution from the Institute
for Mediterranean Studies, providing reflections on the European city and globalisation. The first event is planned for Thursday evening, with a lecture by Predrag Matvejević, "The Mediterranean at the turn of the millennium".
| | RECOGNITION | | Prof. Mauro Baranzini appointed to the Accademia dei Lincei The Accademia dei Lincei - also known as the Lincean Academy - was founded in 1603, and is the oldest science academy worldwide, as well as the foremost institution for Italian culture. Prof. Mauro Baranzini, former Dean of the USI Faculty of Economics, has been appointed as Foreign Member in Moral, Historic and Philological Sciences (Category VII - Social and Political Sciences). | | INAUGURAL LECTURE OF MASSIMILIANO VATIERO | | Looking for "Efficient Rules". Definition, Reasoning and Opportunities of Economic Analysis of Law Prof. Vatiero is Assistant Professor in Economic Law, and will hold his inaugural lecture Monday, September 26, at 5.30pm in the auditorium of the Lugano Campus. The objective of the inaugural lectures it to allow new professors the
opportunity to present and illustrate their disciplines and research fields to the academic world, facilitating their introduction into the USI community. More information.
| | NATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMME (PNR 65) | | New urban quality and public space: developments in Ticino Future development and evolution of programs and strategies for a new urban quality. This is the principal goal to which the "New Urban Quality" national research programme aims to respond. The interim results were presented last Thursday at the Academy of Architecture at the close of the first year of work for the research that will conclude in 2013. More information.
