| IMPROVING PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENCES | | The Ideatorio: a new USI service to encourage dialogue between science and society Encouraging dialogue between science and society, with particular attention to young people, is important both for better dissemination of scientific culture and public understanding of science, as well
as for stimulating new scientific careers in response to the shortage of personnel in this field. USI has risen to this challenge by offering "The Ideatorio". The new service, introduced last week at a press conference, collects the experiences developed in recent years through the Science et Cité
foundation and the Istituto scolastico della Città di Lugano. In addition, the new service will measure the public perception of science in relation to current or controversial scientific issues and develop appropriate participatory and communicative projects in collaboration with the various federal, cantonal, and municipal bodies, as well as other associations. Visit the web site of the Ideatorio and read the press kit. | | THIRD NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FEDERALISM | | "Federalism and the new territorial challenges: institutions, economy and identity" - a congress in
Mendrisio Thursday, May 26, and Friday, May 27, the Third National Conference on Federalism will be held at the Academy of Architecture, organised in close collaboration with the Swiss Federal Council, the Council of States, Conferenza dei Governi Cantonali and the Canton Ticino. The aim is
to examine the opportunities and limitations of current institutional responses in terms of demographic dynamics, economic development, territorial identity, and the effectiveness and the principles of democracy. In addition to the participation of members of the political, economic, research and public administration in Switzerland, the conference also provides the opportunity to look externally, to understand perceptions and representations of Swiss federalism beyond national borders. Monday, May 30 at 6.30pm in Aula Magna (Lugano Campus), a new event in the "Decline or Renaissance? Journalism at a crossroads" series will be held. The evening, entitled, "Do the media cover everything except real power? The globalisation paradox and the unknown role of the new international elites" - will see the participation of key figures such as Piero Ostellino (Editor of Il Corriere della Sera) and American Professor Janine Wedel (George Mason University). The discussion will
revolve around the powers of the international financial-economic elite in the era of globalization, who are capable, according to Wedel, of conditioning media, democracy and the free market.
