Dies academicus: presentata la strategia dell'USI per i prossimi anni

Originale, rigorosa, legata al territorio e aperta al mondo: saranno queste - in estrema sintesi - le caratteristiche principali del nostro ateneo nel 2020, nella visione del Presidente Piero Martinoli. La strategia di sviluppo della nostra Università è stata presentata al pubblico durante il quindicesimo Dies academicus di sabato scorso. La visione 2020 e la pianificazione 2012-2016 dell'USI è anche descritta in un breve opuscolo «nella convinzione» - come ha affermato lo stesso Presidente - «che la condivisione degli obiettivi sia il primo passo concreto verso la loro realizzazione.»

Prestigiosa nomina per il prof. Peter Schulz, eletto al Consiglio nazionale della ricerca del Fondo Nazionale

Il Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca Scientifica (FNS) ha nominato il prof. Peter Schulz nuovo membro del Consiglio nazionale della ricerca. Il Consiglio, composto da 100 professori scelti per le loro eccellenti competenze scientifiche, valuta ogni anno migliaia di richieste e decide del loro finanziamento. Schulz inizierà il proprio mandato il 1. ottobre ed entrerà a far parte della divisione I, quella dedicata alle scienze umane e sociali. Il prof. Schulz sottolinea come questa nomina sia anche un'attestazione della qualità scientifica raggiunta dalla ricerca della Facoltà di scienze della comunicazione: "se l'USI non avesse dato tanta importanza a questo settore non sarebbe stato possibile ottenere questi successi sia presso il Fondo Nazionale, sia in altri contesti accademici nazionali e internazionali."

Il prof. Mario Monotti protagonista dell'ultima lezione inaugurale dell'anno accademico

"Ingegneria e architettura: una disciplina, quella del costruttore": Mario Monotti, professore straordinario dell'Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio, concluderà con il suo intervento il primo ciclo delle lezioni inaugurali dell'USI. L'appuntamento è per giovedì 19 maggio alle ore 17.30 nell'Aula Magna del campus di Mendrisio (Palazzo Canavée). Lo scopo delle lezioni inaugurali è quello di permettere ai nuovi professori di presentarsi e di illustrare la propria disciplina al mondo accademico e alla comunità, favorendone così l'inserimento e dando origine a preziose occasioni per creare legami scientifici e umani più forti fra le quattro Facoltà dell'USI.

Alzheimer, nuova importante scoperta

Il gruppo del prof. Maurizio Molinari ha pubblicato un'importante scoperta che potrebbe favorire lo sviluppo di nuovi approcci terapeutici per contrastare il decorso della malattia di Alzheimer. Lo studio, durato 7 anni e pubblicato sulla rivista PLoSONE, è stato svolto in collaborazione con il gruppo del prof. Patrick Aebischer del Politecnico Federale di Losanna (EPFL) e del dr. Paolo Paganetti (Novartis Pharma AG di Basilea). La malattia di Alzheimer è una patologia neurodegenerativa che colpisce circa il 10% della popolazione oltre i 65 anni d’età causando la progressiva perdita delle funzioni cognitive legate alla memoria, all’orientamento e alle capacità verbali.

Lavorare nello sport: coniugare passione e professione

Il settore sportivo offre numerose opportunità di carriera, non solo legate all'attività agonistica: martedì 17 maggio alle ore 12.00 (aula A11, campus di Lugano) si terrà un incontro in cui saranno discusse le numerose possibilità professionali legate al mondo dello sport. All'incontro, introdotto dal Decano della Facoltà di scienze economiche prof. Rico Maggi, prenderanno parte Eric Pansier (Direttore Marketing, The North Face), Francesco Tanzi (Direttore Marketing dell'HC Lugano e laureato dell'USI), Paolo Duca (Capitano dell'Ambri-Piotta, atleta della nazionale svizzera di Hockey e studente dell'USI) e Piero Gros (Commentatore di sci alpino per la RSI, già vincitore della coppa del mondo di sci nel 1974 e campione olimpionico di slalom speciale nel 1976). Il workshop sarà preceduto da un incontro informale tra diverse personalità legate al settore sportivo con gli studenti-atleti dell’USI, già attivi a livello agonistico in diverse discipline.

Dies academicus: strategies presented for USI's coming years

Original, rigorous, tied to the region and open to the world: very briefly, these will be the principal characteristics of our University in 2020, in the vision of President Piero Martinoli. The development strategy of our University was presented to the public during the 15th Dies academicus this past Saturday. USI's 2020 vision and 2012-2016 planning is also described in a brief booklet, "In the belief" - as stated by the President himself - "that the sharing of goals is the first concrete step toward their realisation".

Prestigious appointment for Prof. Peter Schulz, elected to the National Research Council of SNF

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) appointed Prof. Peter Schulz as a new member of the National Research Council. The council, composed of 100 professors chosen for their excellent scientific competencies, evaluates thousands of requests each year before deciding whether and how to fund them. Schulz will begin his term on October 1st, and will join Division 1, which is dedicated to humanities and social sciences. Prof. Schulz emphasises that this appointment is also a testament to the scientific quality of research achieved by the Faculty of Communication Sciences: "If USI had not given so much importance to this sector, it would not have been possible to achieve such success, whether at the Swiss National Science Foundation or in other national and international academic settings."

Prof. Mario Monotti to hold the final inaugural lecture of the academic year

"Engineering and architecture: a discipline, that of the builder " is the name of the lecture to be delivered by Mario Monotti, Associate Professor at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio. His talk will conclude the first series of inaugural lectures held at USI. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 19th at 5.30pm in Aula Magna of the Mendrisio Campus (Palazzo Canavée). The aim of the inaugural lecture is to allow new professors to introduce themselves and illustrate their own disciplines before the academic world and the community, in this way facilitating their entry while creating a valuable opportunity to build stronger scientific and human ties between the four USI Faculties.

Alzheimer's: a new, important discovery

The research group under Prof. Maurizio Molinari published an important discovery that could facilitate the development of new therapeutic approaches to counteract the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The study, which took course 7 years and is published in the journal PLoSONE, was carried out in collaboration with the group working under Prof. Patrick Aebischer of Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Paolo Paganetti (Novartis Pharma AG, Basel). Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative pathology that affects about 10% of the population over 65 years of age, causing progressive loss of cognitive function related to memory, orientation, and verbal skills.

Working in Sport: Join Passion and Profession

The sport sector offers numerous career opportunities, not limited to those related to competition. Tuesday, May 17 at 12pm (Room A11, Lugano Campus) a meeting will be held at which the many professional possibilities linked to the world of sport will be discussed. The meeting, introduced by Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Prof. Rico Maggi, will see the participation of the following professionals: Eric Pansier (Marketing Director of The North Face), Francesco Tanzi (Marketing Director of the Hockey Club Lugano and USI graduate), Paolo Duca (Captain of the Ambri-Piotta, athlete on the Swiss National Hockey Team and USI student), and Piero Gros (Alpine Ski commentator at RSI, Champion of the Ski World Cup in 1974 and winner of the gold medal in slalom at 1976 Winter Olympics). The workshop will be preceded by an ad-hoc meeting between various personalities linked to the sport sector with the student-athletes of USI who are already at a competitive level in diverse sports.
