| | | The 15th annual Dies academicus will be held on Saturday Dies academicus is the most important occasion for convening and for informing the cantonal, national and international community about USI's development. The ceremony opens at 10am in Aula Magna of the Lugano Campus, with an address from the National Council of Switzerland President, Jean-René Germanier. The keynote will be given by newly elected State Councillor Manuele Bertoli, Director of DECS, followed by a speech from Prof. Daniela Mondini, art history lecturer at the Academy of Architecture. The report delivered by USI President Piero Martinoli will further explain the most promising and significant development scenarios for our University. And finally, the traditional honours will be conferred (the PhD honoris causa and the CS Award for Best Teaching); Dr. Amilcare Berra will be conferred the title of honorary member of USI. Programme and invitation. | | LECTURE | | The Power of Abstraction: a talk by Barbara Liskov, a pioneer of software programming languages and software engineering Barbara Liskov is the first woman to have received a PhD in computer science in the US - at Stanford in 1968 - and is currently a professor at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. Friday, May 13 at 4pm (Room A22, Lugano Campus), Liskov will discuss abstraction mechanisms, - at the centre of many informatics
activities - their evolution and possible scientific research developments in the sector. More information.
| | INFORMATICS AT THE SERVICE OF ENTERTAINMENT | | Disney and Informatics: the opportunities of Geometric and Visual Computing Just how important is the field of informatics in the world of Disney? How much does the world of software shape the creative processes? Which educational and professional opportunities are opening in this sector? Friday, May 13, from 6pm - 7pm (Auditorium, Lugano Campus) Prof. Dr. Markus Gross, head of the Computer Graphics Laboratory (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich) and Director of Disney Research, Zürich, will illustrate various examples of how informatics plays a central role in the creative process of many Disney products. At the close of the lecture, Prof. Michael Bronstein of the USI Faculty of Informatics will illustrate the contents and opportunities of the new Master in Geometric and Visual
