| DEBATE ORGANISED BY THE INSTITUTE FOR MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES | | The Mediterranean: Revolts or revolution? In the past months, the Mediterranean has experienced a period of great
upheaval impacting countries such as Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Some commentators and political scientists have interpreted these disturbances as an epochal revolution, while others describe them as simple revolts. Prof. Vittorio Emanuele Parsi and Prof. Vittorio Dan Segre - with Prof. Maurizio Viroli moderating - will attempt to clarify the nature of this unrest during a debate, which will take place Friday, March 18th, at 5.30pm in room A11 (Lugano Campus). More information on the speakers. | | CODE MONITORS REGIONAL BUSINESS CYCLES | | The economic recovery is solid The Centre for the Observation of Economic Dynamics (CODE) published the latest issue of the PanelCODE newsletter, which monitors regional business cycles. Published by the Institute for Economic Research at USI, the study was created with the support of major entrepreneurial associations in the Canton. This edition of PanelCODE reveals that the economic recovery in Ticino is proving stronger than foreseen: contrary to expectations,
growth did not weaken, but rather continued in the second half of 2010. Data collected from a business panel in the fourth quarter of 2010 shows that all indicators are in positive territory. Read the
newsletter. | | ROUND TABLE | | Books, reading and libraries (despite boundaries) Are technology and the global context changing the way culture is used and consumed? What does the future hold for books and libraries? These are just a few of the questions on the agenda at the round table organised
by ISI and the University Library Services. The event will be held this Thursday, March 17th at 4pm in the auditorium at
the Lugano Campus. The speakers present will be Marie-Christine Doffey (Director of the Swiss National Library), Prof. Giovanni Solimine (Università degli studi di Roma “La Sapienza”), Prof. Carlo Ossola (Institute of Italian Studies, USI) and Giuseppe Origgi (Director of University Library Services in Lugano). | | COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES | | Observing the dance of atoms: the computer as a new virtual microscope The perpetual progress of supercomputers now makes it possible to simulate many physiochemical processes. Through the use of algorithms, the trajectory of atoms can be transformed into images, and the motion of atoms
can be studied with precision. This evening, Monday, March 14, at 8.30pm (Auditorium, Lugano Campus), Prof. Michele Parrinello will show the most recent progress in this area. This event is organized by the Società ticinese di Scienze naturali and by Science et Cité (USI) to mark the occasion of
the International Year of Chemistry. | | PERFORMANCE AS PART OF "FOR ONE VOICE" SERIES | | Caterina Sagna dances the "Spiritual Exercises" of Ignazio di Loyola Saturday evening at 8.30pm at Il Foce Theatre (Lugano), Caterina Sagna performs on stage the first "teatro di memoria e di
iniziazione interiore" of the modern age. The show is part of the "For one voice" series organised by the Dicastero Giovani ed Eventi of Lugano, the USI Institute of Italian Studies (ISI) and Frigoriferi Milanesi of Milan. of Hélène Binet is replete with collaborations alongside numerous world-renowned architects such as Daniel Libeskind, David Chipperfield, Tony Fretton, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor and many others. Libeskind considers her one of the most important figures internationally in architectural photography, recognizing that "every time Hélène Binet takes a photo, she displays the challenge,
the strength, the pathos and the fragility of architecture". Hélène Binet will be in Mendrisio Thursday, March 17th at 8pm for a public lecture, at which she will present her work and share the story of her intense path that led her from Lugano (her birthplace) to Rome, Geneva and then London, where she currently resides. This event offers occasion to reflect on the linkages between photography, art and
architecture.
