| TONIGHT IN THE AULA MAGNA OF LUGANO CAMPUS | | Graduation Ceremony for 121 students in economics and communication 26 Bachelor’s degree, 92 two-year Masters and 3 Masters of Advanced Studies will be conferred today at 5pm in the Aula Magna of Lugano Campus. After a welcome speech by USI’s President Piero Martinoli, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences Michael Gibbert, and the Dean of the Faculty of Economics François Degeorge will take the floor. The graduates, hailing from 22 different countries will receive 31diplomas in Communication Sciences, 60 in Economics and 30 interfaculty diplomas earned by attending joint programmes. Congratulations to all new graduates! | | INTERDISCIPLINARY INSTITUTE OF DATA SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES | | "Big Data: Big Errors or Big Opportunities?" The second encounter of the series Data and Society: opportunities and concerns, promoted by the Interdisciplinary Institute of Data Science will be held on Tuesday, April 18th at 6pm in the Auditorium of Lugano Campus. Stefano Iacus, director of the Data Science Lab of the University of Milan, will take the floor and discuss recent developments in the analysis of Big Data of social media. Issues such as possible errors of data analysis and interpretation will be tackled together with information retrieval,
and the use of such information to make predictions. >>> | | GENEVA BOOK FAIR | | Prof. Bertil Cottier invited to speak about freedom of expression Following the public debate Satire and journalism after the attacks at Charlie Hebdo, held on Lugano Campus last March 31st, USI’s prof.
Bertil Cottier will return to discuss about issues involving the freedom of speech. The chance will be at the Geneva Book Fair that will take place from April 29th until May 3rd. On Friday, May 1st prof. Cottier will take part in the debate Faut-il limiter la liberté d'expression? organised by the newspaper Le Temps of the French speaking region of Switzerland. >>> | | TO PROTECT UNIVERSITIES FROM TERRORIST ATTACKS | | A minute of silence for the victims of Garissa University College Universities have no boundaries; for this reason the EUA,
European
University Association, has made a plea to all the universities of Europe to unite for a minute of silence on Monday, April 27th at 12pm to remember all 147 students who died during the terrorist attack on April 2nd at Garissa University College. A symbolic gesture to condemn all attacks on freedom of speech and expression, on personal ambition and on the right to education. AIESEC culinary festival is back On Wednesday, April 29th from 4pm the campus will liven up thanks to the annual event organised by the student association AIESEC Lugano dedicated to international food. The Global Village is not a simple culinary festival: it is the perfect chance for all participants to meet with cultures form different countries, learn something more on their language and traditions and to vote for their favourite.
