Frontiere: dall’universo all’università. L'USI ha festeggiato il 19° compleanno

La cerimonia è stata l'occasione per assistere agli interventi di Stéphane Rossini, Presidente del Consiglio nazionale, di Fabiola Gianotti, fisico e Direttore Generale designato del CERN, e del Decano della Facoltà di scienze informatiche Michele Lanza. A seguire il discorso del Presidente Piero Martinoli, con una riflessione sul ruolo delle università all'interno della recente riorganizzazione del sistema accademico svizzero. Sono stati inoltre consegnati il dottorato honoris causa a Franco Farinelli, geografo di levatura internazionale, a Jean-Pierre Danthine, vice presidente della Banca Nazionale Svizzera, e a Gilles Brassard, informatico di fama mondiale. Assegnato a Franz Graf, prof. dell'Accademia di architettura, il Credit Suisse Award for best teaching.

"Experimenta 01", i workshop dell'Accademia in mostra

Sarà inaugurata mercoledì 22 aprile la prima esposizione dedicata alle attività didattiche che si svolgono all'interno dei workshop integrati nell'offerta formativa dell'Accademia. Tra i progetti esposti quelli di WISH, workshop dedicato al tema dell'abitazione per la collettività, di Building Reality, svolto in Burkina Faso, e del workshop Filmare l'architettura, diretto dal prof. Marco Müller. L'inaugurazione della mostra, che sarà visitabile fino al 22 maggio, si svolgerà a partire dalle ore 19 presso la Galleria dell'Accademia di architettura (Palazzo Canavée).

"Dati, Algoritmi e scatole nere". Primo ciclo di incontri dal titolo "Dati e Società: opportunità e paure"

Martedì 21 aprile, alle ore 18 nell'Auditorio del campus di Lugano, si terrà il primo appuntamento del ciclo di incontri organizzato dal nuovo Istituto Interdisciplinare di Data Science. Da aprile a giugno alcuni tra i principali esponenti di questo campo di ricerca saranno chiamati ad intervenire con l'obiettivo di favorire un legame diretto tra la ricerca accademica e il contesto economico, sensibilizzando il territorio alla rilevanza della "scienza dei dati". Nel corso del primo incontro Ciro Cattuto, dall'ISI Foundation di Torino, affronterà il tema Dati, Algoritmi e scatole nere.

Il lavoro dello studio "Pezo von Ellrichshausen" per il ciclo "Lezioni di architettura"

La serie di conferenze aperte al pubblico dal nome Lezioni di architettura nasce per raccontare il lavoro di grandi architetti provenienti da continenti e ambiti culturali diversi. Il prossimo appuntamento, che si terrà giovedì 23 aprile alle ore 19.30 presso l'Aula magna del campus di Mendrisio, sarà dedicato allo studio cileno Pezo von Ellrichshausen. Fondato nel 2002 a Concepción, da Mauricio Pezo e Sofia von Ellrichshausen, lo studio si è affermato come uno dei più promettenti nel panorama dell’architettura contemporanea americana.

Le lezioni di Master a porte aperte

A partire da questa settimana e fino al 30 aprile, agli studenti Bachelor sarà offerta la possibilità di seguire alcune lezioni dei programmi Master dell'USI grazie all'iniziativa dei Master Meetings. Accompagnati da uno studente, che racconterà la sua esperienza rispetto al programma, sarà possibile valutare in prima persona se i contenuti proposti corrispondono alle aspettative. Per iscriversi basta semplicemente compilare il formulario presente sulla pagina dell'evento.

Iniziata la quinta edizione dell'EMBA

L’Executive MBA, giunto alla sua quinta edizione, ha preso avvio nelle scorse settimane con il primo dei 14 corsi  che si terranno fino ad ottobre 2016. L’EMBA è un programma avanzato di general management, tenuto da docenti dal profilo internazionale, che integra conoscenze globali con un forte radicamento nella business community locale. I partecipanti di questa edizione sono 20 tra manager, professionisti e imprenditori di tutti i settori dell’economia e dalla provenienza nazionale ed internazionale.

Immersione nell'informatica per gli studenti dei Licei Lugano 1 e 2

Il 22 aprile al Liceo Lugano 1 si terrà una giornata di autogestione nella quale alcuni studenti spiegheranno ai loro compagni quanto imparato nel corso dell'esposizione per i 10 anni della Facoltà di scienze informatiche e grazie agli incontri con il prof. Matthias Hauswirth. Il 27 e 28 aprile sarà invece il turno del Liceo Lugano 2, dove avranno luogo due conferenze e workshop tenute da ricercatori e prof. della Facoltà di scienze informatiche con l'obiettivo di dimostrare la centralità della disciplina nel contesto economico e sociale.

La donazione di settimana scorsa è stata un altro successo

La Fondazione Servizio Trasfusionale CRS della Svizzera italiana, con cui l'USI ha organizzato le due giornate la settimana scorsa, ha comunicato che sono state effettuate 99 donazioni. Un ottimo risultato, che dà un contributo prezioso agli ospedali e alle cliniche del cantone che ogni anno necessitano di circa 13'000 concentrati di globuli rossi da trasfondere ai pazienti. Raggiungere questo quantitativo è sempre una sfida, per questo l’apporto di ognuno di voi è importante: vi ringraziamo tutti e vi inviatiamo a partecipare ancor più numerosi!!

Frontiers: from the universe to the university. USI celebrates its 19th birthday

The ceremony has been the perfect chance to listen to presentations given by Stéphane Rossini, President of the National Council, by Fabiola Gianotti, physicist and next Director General of CERN, and by Michele Lanza, Dean of USI's Faculty of Informatics. Closing the event, a speech by USI President Piero Martinoli on the role of universities in the light of the recent make over of the Swiss academic system. Honorary doctorates has been conferred to Franco Farinelli, geographer of international standing, to Jean-Pierre Danthine, vice president of the Swiss National Bank, and to Gilles Brassard, world-renowned computer scientist. The Credit Swiss Award for best teaching has been assigned to prof. Franz Graf of the Academy of Architecture.

"Experimenta 01", the Academy’s workshops on display

The first exhibition dedicated to the activities held within the Academy’s workshops will be inaugurated on Wednesday, April 22nd from 7pm at the Academy’s Gallery in Mendrisio (Canavée Building). Among the projects on display, the workshops WISH dedicated to community housing, Building Reality, held in Burkina Faso, and the workshop Filming Architecture directed by prof. Marco Müller. It will be possible to visit the exhibition until May 22nd.

"Data, Algorithms and Black Boxes". The first series of encounters “Data and Society: opportunities and concerns” gets underway

The first encounter of the series organised by the Interdisciplinary Institute of Data Science will be held on Tuesday, April 21st at 6pm in the Auditorium of Lugano Campus. From April until June leading figures in this research field will be called upon to encourage a direct link between academic research and the economy, involving the local communities and making them aware of the relevance of  data science. In this first lecture Ciro Cattuto from the ISI Foundation of Turin will tackle the theme Data, Algorithms and black boxes.

The work of the studio "Pezo von Ellrichshausen" for the series “Lessons of Architecture”

The series of public lectures Lessons of Architecture was established to narrate the work of great architects from different continents and cultural environments. The next encounter will be held on Thursday, April 23rd at 7.30pm in the Aula Magna of Mendrisio Campus and it will be dedicated to the Chilean Studio Pezo von Ellrichshausen. Founded in 2002 in Conceptión by Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen, the studio is today one of the most prominent in contemporary American architecture.

Open Master Classes

From this week until April 30th all Bachelor students will be offered the chance to attend USI’s Master classes thanks to the initiative Master Meetings. Participants will be paired with a current graduate student who will share his/her experience with the programme. Interested individuals may then determine through first-hand experience whether the Master's coursework is a good match with their needs. To register simply fill out the form in event page.

The fifth EMBA starts off

The fifth Executive MBA kicked off during the past weeks with the first of 14 courses that will be held until October 2016. The EMBA is an advanced programme on general management held by internationally renowned faculty that aims at integrating global knowledge while maintaining strong roots in the local business community. This year the EMBA counts 20 participants among managers, professional and entrepreneurs hailing from all economic fields both nationally and internationally.

A dive into informatics for the high school students of Lugano 1 and 2

On April 22nd the high school Liceo 1 will be taken over for self-management. On that day some students will explain to their schoolmates what they learnt during the encounters with prof. Hauswirth at the exhibition dedicated to the 10 years of the Faculty of Informatics. On April 27th and 28th the high school Lugano 2 will host 2 lectures and workshops held by researchers and professors of USI’s Faculty of Informatics with the aim of showing how relevant the subject is in our social and economic contest.    

Last week’s donation has been another success

The Transfusion Service of the Swiss Red Cross of the Italian Speaking part of Switzerland, with which USI has organised the two-day event held last week, announced that 99 donations were made. An excellent outcome, which gives a valuable contribution to the Canton’s hospitals and clinics in need of about 13,000 red cell concentrates for their patients. Reaching this goal is always a challenge, which is why each contribution is important: we thank you all and invite you to participate in large numbers!
