| A FIFTH FACULTY FOR USI | | Green light for the new Faculty of Biomedical Sciences Last week the Parliament of Ticino voted in
favour of the foundation of the new
Faculty. The amendment to the related Act was approved with 66 votes in favour, 2 abstaining and 1 against. Piero Martinoli, USI's President and leader of the project from its inception, has expressed his deep gratitude towards the many partners involved in the project that was initiated five years ago. The upcoming University Council session will define the objectives of the Faculty Constituent Council, which will be responsible for setting the agenda and regulations for the appointment of professors. >>> | | TONIGHT IN THE AULA MAGNA ON THE LUGANO CAMPUS | | Graduation Ceremony for 145 students in Communication Sciences The graduates will receive their diploma from USI's President, Piero Martinoli, and from the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Michael Gibbert. 52 Bachelor, 77 Master, and 16 PhD degrees will be awarded. The following awards will be given to the best-ranked students: the ABB/ALSTOM Award for the best Bachelor, Master and PhD diplomas, and the Alma Bacciarini Award to the best diploma in Italian language, literature and culture. >>> | | PROF. MAURO BARANZINI FAREWELL LECTURE | | Economy and Civil Society: from a sustainable past to an uncertain future A leading member of the scientific committee that designed and laid the foundations of our University, Prof. Baranzini was Dean of the Faculty of Economics from 2005 to 2009. During his academic career at USI, Oxford, Harvard, Berkeley,
MIT and Stanford, Prof. Baranzini devoted his time to teaching and research in the fields of macroeconomics, income distribution and capital accumulation. His farewell lecture will be held on Thursday,
December 11th at 5.30pm in the Auditorium on the Lugano Campus and will be an opportunity to pay tribute to the valuable work that prof. The encounters are held by the art historian, classical scholar, archaeologist and philologist Salvatore Settis, appointed for the second edition of the Borromini Chair of the Academy of Architecture. (IRB) | | From the Bench to the Clinic - 6th EADV Dermatological Meeting in Ticino An event to provide updates on topics selected by dermatologists, allergists, immunologists, internists and oncologists will be held on Thursday, December 4th. The meeting is organised by the Scientific Committee of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) in close collaboration with the Società Ticinese di Dermatologia, the Dermatology department from the Bellinzona regional hospital, and the IRB. The day will consist of a research session in the morning (Immune response and skin), followed in the afternoon by a clinically

Swiss students living in Ticino who are admitted to USI and enrolled in a Bachelor (2nd or 3rd year) or a Master programme (1st or 2nd year). Applications are to be submitted to the front desks of Lugano and Mendrisio Campus by January 31st, 2015. Christmas tree in Piazza Riforma It is tradition at this time of year to light the thousands of lights of the Christmas tree in front of the City Hall of Lugano. Tonight, at 6 pm, the evocative moment will be graced with the wonderful voice of our graduate Eliane Müller, who with her piano was the winner in 2012 of the television program Die grössten Schweizer Talente. Eliane’s Christmas tour will bring her again to Lugano on December 27th at the Palazzo dei
