| MUCH MORE THAN COMPUTERS | | The Faculty of Informatics turns 10 The courses began on the morning of October 18, 2004, with 6 professors and 41 students. Since then, the new Faculty has come a long way. 25 professors, 150 researchers, more than 200 students from over 30 countries study and work on competitive research projects, financed both at national and at European level with more than 38 million francs raised over the years. On Saturday, October 18 in the Aula Magna of Lugano
Campus, an interactive exhibition will introduce in a clear and straightforward way the different areas of research on which the Faculty focused in recent years. A way to discover the central and innovative role that the discipline plays in our everyday
life. >>> | | USI'S AFFILIATED INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN BIOMEDICINE (IRB) | | Identified Neutralising
Antibodies to Influenza Virus To develop a “universal” influenza vaccine that is simpler and more effective than the current ones: this is what sums up the potential of the IRB’s discovery that was published yesterday on Nature.
The research team led by prof. Antonio Lanzavecchia (IRB’s director) and Davide Corti (Vice President of Humabs BioMed), in cooperation with dr. Elisa Vicenzi of Hospital San Raffaele, has been able to reconstruct the genealogy tree of a particular type of antibodies that can neutralize multiple species of influenza viruses. >>> | | ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE | | The new
series “Lessons of Architecture” gets underway The five lectures will narrate the work of renowned architects from three continents and from different cultural backgrounds: Basel, Lugano, Geneva, Concepción and Beijing. The series will begin on Thursday, October 9, at 7.30pm in the Aula Magna of Mendrisio Campus with a lecture by Roger Diener, professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich and member of the Federal Commission for Historical Monuments. >>> | | INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN BIOMEDICINE (IRB) | | Ebola: antibodies isolated 5 years ago, the industry wasted time Last week the national media have reported that 5 years ago, the IRB was the first worldwide to develop a method to isolate the antibodies of patients who recovered from Ebola. “With these antibodies one could develop a vaccine
or a medicine", explained prof. Antonio Lanzavecchia, "but in this field the pharmaceutical industry has shown little interest, too little is being invested". >>> | | LECTURA DANTIS. III – PARADISO IN MEMORY OF JACQUELINE RISSET | | «The glory of Him who moveth everything» Jacqueline Risset

lecture in her memory entitled The glory of Him who moveth everything. >>> | | AN EVENT ORGANISED BY USI AND SUPSI | | A Conference by Gerd Folkers on Reproducibility The concept of reproducibility is widely considered a cornerstone of scientific methodology. Professor Dr. Gerd Folkers, who teaches Medical Chemistry at ETH Zurich, will illustrate how recent problems with
the reproducibility of empirical results in large-scale systems and in biomedical research have cast doubts on its universal and rigid applicability beyond the so-called basic sciences. The event will be held on Friday October 24 at 5pm in room A11 (Lugano Campus). Register here by October
