| WELCOME AND WELCOME BACK | | New Arrivals at the Academic Community A new academic year kicks off and USI welcomes all freshmen and 7 new professors. Starting this semester at the Academy of Architecture will begin their teaching activities Joao Nunes Ribeiro Ferreira (design) and Muck Petzet (ecology and building systems). At the Faculty of Economics USI welcomes Dirk Martignoni (Organization Management) and Patricia Funk (Applied Microeconomics), and at the Faculy of Communication Sciences Sara Greco (Argumentation), Giacomo Jori (Modern Italian Literature) and Fabio Pusterla (Literature). Kéré (which will bring students for six weeks in Burkina Faso) and the establishment of the Laboratorio Ticino (a research facility that carries out activities on the topic of territorial design). A wide range of public lectures, exhibits and encounters was also introduced to complete the teaching and cultural offer of USI’s Academy of Architecture. >>> | | CHANGE AT THE TOP OF A FACULTY | | Prof. Gibbert appointed as new Dean of Communication Sciences Michael Gibbert is Full Professor of Marketing at IMCA (USI’s Institute of Marketing and Communication Management). After earning his PhD at the University of St.Gallen he was research assistant at INSEAD, post-doc at Yale University and Associate Professor at Università Bocconi in Milan. USI thanks professor Lorenzo Cantoni who led the Faculty of Communication Sciences for the past 4 years, for his outstanding contribution. >>> | | USI’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE DIVINE COMEDY RESUMES | | The Series on "Paradiso" gets underway The public lectures on Dante Alighieri’s Commedia organised by the Institute of Italian Studies get underway: on Wednesday September 17, the musicologist Pedro Memelsdorff will kick off the series Lectura Dantis III on Paradiso, with a lecture entitled Sweet Symphony of Paradise. The encounter will be held at 6pm in the Auditorium of Lugano Campus. All lectures from the previous academic years on Inferno and Purgatorio are available for download on our
iTunesU channel. >>> | | BSI SWISS ARCHITECTURAL AWARD 2014 | | Award Ceremony and Exhibit Opening at the Academy The
exhibit presents
to the public the works of the 27 candidates with special attention paid to the winner, the Spanish architect José María Sánchez García. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday September 18 at 9pm in the Aula Magna of Mendrisio Campus (Canavée Building). The fourth BSI Swiss Architectural Award, is conferred to young architects who made a significant contribution to contemporary architecture by showing landscape and environmental awareness. >>> | | YOUNG STUDENTS VISITING THE FACULTY OF INFORMATICS | | Study Week “Fascinated by Informatics” From September 8 to 13, several high school students dedicated an entire week to informatics related topics, thanks to a cooperation among different Swiss faculties of informatics and the Science and Youth Foundation. At USI, eight secondary school students from the German part of Switzerland developed small projects on topics such as the simulation of interaction among celestial bodies in a galaxy, and the design of tools to monitor and improve body movements during physical exercise. >>> | | VENTURE CHALLENGE 2014 | | How to turn your vision into a successful entrepreneurial project The course offers the chance to step into the role of a young entrepreneur and acquire the skills needed for the establishment and the development of a start-up. The course is free and sponsored by the Commition for Technology and Innovation (CTI) and in Ticino
is

the procedures of
the renewed Swiss participation Switzerland and the EU have agreed on a partial association to the programme Horizon 2020, which will provisionally come into effect today and initially run until the end of 2016. As associate partners (financed by Brussels) researchers can participate to the following activities: ECR grants, Marie Curie actions, Future and Emerging Technologies projects (FET), research infrastructures, and to all the actions for spreading excellence and widening participation. For all other calls Swiss researchers can participate as a third country entity, to the extent that is permitted by the individual calls, and with direct Swiss founding.
