Il "Nobel dell'informatica" ad un dottore honoris causa dell'USI

Leslie Lamport, ricercatore scientifico di Microsoft Research in California, ottenne il dottorato honoris causa dalla Facoltà di scienze informatiche nel 2006 "per i suoi contributi pionieristici ai fondamenti teorici dei sistemi informatici distribuiti". Oggi gli viene attribuito il Turing Award, l'equivalente del premio Nobel per l'informatica. È il secondo importante riconoscimento attribuito a un dottore honoris causa dell’USI: nel 2003 il prof. Robert F. Engle, poco dopo aver ricevuto il dottorato honoris causa dalla Facoltà di scienze economiche, vinse il Nobel per l'economia. L'USI ha finora conferito quattordici dottorati honoris causa.

Miele, acqua, latte, sale e pane

Il tema di questo nuovo ciclo di appuntamenti, che prevede 10 lezioni da marzo a ottobre, è la “Materia del vivere”: professori e ricercatori dell’Istituto di studi italiani dell'USI approfondiranno il valore simbolico e letterario di 5 elementi comuni della nostra alimentazione. Il ciclo è organizzato in collaborazione con l’Area Turismo ed eventi della Città di Lugano e la Scuola Cantonale di Commercio di Bellinzona. Il primo appuntamento (Miele, prof. Antonella Anedda) si terrà oggi a Bellinzona e sarà replicato mercoledì 26 marzo alle 16.00 in aula A21 (campus di Lugano).

'Lezione di architettura' di Diébédo Francis Kéré

Durante gli studi alla Technische Universität di Berlino Kéré fonda l’associazione Schulbausteine für Gando, per combinare il sapere acquisito in Europa con le tecniche costruttive tradizionali dell’Africa occidentale. Ha ricevuto il Global Holcim Award Gold (2012), il Marcus Prize (2011), il BSI Swiss Architectural Award (2010) e l’Aga Khan Award (2004). I suoi progetti sono stati esposti alla Biennale di Venezia (2010) e al MoMA di New York (2011). La conferenza si terrà giovedì 27 marzo alle 19.30 nell'Aula magna del campus di Mendrisio (palazzo Canavée).

Borse di studio, un investimento per il futuro

Lo Zonta Club Lugano, tramite la sua Fondazione, ha istituito dieci borse di studio per studenti dell’USI o della SUPSI. La cerimonia di consegna si terrà sabato 29 marzo alle 18.00, a margine della tavola rotonda Borse di studio, un investimento per il futuro alla quale parteciperanno il Consigliere di Stato Manuele Bertoli, il presidente della SUPSI Alberto Cotti, il Segretario di Stato per la formazione, la ricerca e l'innovazione Mauro Dell'Ambrogio e il Presidente dell'USI Piero Martinoli. L'evento è aperto al pubblico.

Lo sguardo di "Altr'Arti" si posa sul Tibet

Altr’Arti è il ciclo primaverile di incontri d’arte proposto dal 2006 dalla Società Ticinese di Belle Arti che offre uno sguardo sull’arte delle culture extra-europee, in un confronto utile anche alla comprensione dei linguaggi artistici dell’Occidente. Gli incontri sono presentati nell'ambito dell'iniziativa C@USI, promossa dal TEC-Lab. Il primo appuntamento è per domani martedì 25 marzo in aula A11 alle 18.30 (campus di Lugano) con la conferenza Stabile come una montagna. L’arte del ritratto dei grandi Lama del Tibet del tibetologo Ramon N. Prats.

All'USI un dibattito del parlamento studentesco europeo

Martedì 25 marzo alle 16:00 in auditorio (campus di Lugano) un'ottantina di diciottenni della Scuola Cantonale di Commercio saranno all'USI per discutere il futuro della città. Il dibattito sarà preceduto dal saluto del Consigliere di Stato Manuele Bertoli e del Presidente dell'USI prof. Piero Martinoli. L'appuntamento fa parte di una tre giorni in cui gli studenti dibatteranno di scienza, tecnologia e sviluppo sostenibile nel contesto dell'iniziativa European Student Parliaments on Science. A livello europeo il progetto - che mira a rafforzare lo scambio tra studenti e scienziati illustrando le procedure parlamentari in materia di scienza e ricerca - vede la partecipazione di 2000 giovani.

All we need is blood: all'USI doppia occasione per donare il sangue

Dopo il successo delle prime tre edizioni che hanno permesso di raccogliere circa 120 litri di sangue, aiutando oltre 500 pazienti, l'USI in collaborazione con il Servizio Trasfusionale CRS della Svizzera italiana, organizza due giorni di donazione del sangue. L'appuntamento è per lunedì 31 marzo (11.00-16.00) e martedì 1° aprile (10:30-14:30) nell'Aula magna del campus di Lugano. Per donare occorre essere in buona salute e pesare più di 50 kg. Basta presentarsi con un documento, non a digiuno. La procedura dura 30 minuti.

The "Nobel in Informatics" to a USI’s Honorary Doctorate Recipient

Leslie Lamport, researcher at Microsoft Research in California, received the Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Informatics in 2006 for “his pioneering contribution to the theoretical foundations of informatics distributed systems". Today he is the recipient of the 2013 Turing Award, the equivalent of the Nobel in Informatics. It is the second important recognition conferred to a USI's Honorary Doctor: in 2003 Robert F. Engle was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, soon after receiving the Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Economics. So far, USI has conferred fourteen Ph.D Honoris Causa.

Honey, Water, Milk, Salt and Bread

The theme of this new series of encounters of ten lectures, to be held from March to October, is “Substance of Living”. Professors and researchers of USI’s Institute of Italian Studies will delve into the symbolic and literary value of five common ingredients in our diet. The series is organised in cooperation with the City of Lugano Area of Tourism and Events and the Cantonal School of Commerce of Bellinzona. The first lecture (Honey, by prof. Antonella Anedda) will be held today in Bellinzona and again on Wednesday, 26 March at 4pm in room A21 of Lugano Campus.

'Lessons of Architecture' by Diébédo Francis Kéré

Scholarships, investing in the future

Through its Foundation, the Zonta Club Lugano has established ten scholarships for USI and SUPSI students. The award ceremony will be held on Saturday, 29 March at 6pm during the roundtable Scholarships, investing in the future, with the participation of State Councillor Manuele Bertoli, SUPSI’s President Alberto Cotti, Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation Mauro Dell'Ambrogio and USI’s President Piero Martinoli. The event is public.

"Altr'Arti": eyes on Tibet

Altr’Arti is the spring lecture series on art, with the aim of understanding the language of Western art through the comparison with art in cultures outside of Europe. It was first offered in 2006 by the Società Ticinese di Belle Arti. The encounters are presented in the framework of the initiative C@USI, promoted by the TEC-Lab. Tibetologist Ramon N. Prats will hold the first lecture of the series entitled Steady as a Mountain. The art of portraits of Tibet’s great Lamas tomorrow Tuesday, 25 March at 6.30pm in room A11.

At USI a debate of the European Student Parliaments

About eighty eighteen-years-old from the Scuola Cantonale di Commercio will be at USI to debate about the future of the city. The event will be held on Tuesday, 25 March at 4pm in the Auditorium (Lugano Campus) preceded by a welcome speech of State Councillor Manuele Bertoli and USI’s President Piero Martinoli. The encounter is part of a three-day event in which students will debate about science, technology and sustainable development in the framework of European Student Parliaments on Science. With 2000 participants from all over Europe, the project aims at strengthening the exchange between students and scientists by illustrating parliamentary procedures in the field of science and research.

All we need is Blood: a double chance to donate blood at USI

After the first three successful blood drives in which 120 litres of blood were collected helping over 500 patients, USI organises two days of blood donation in cooperation with the Transfusion Service of the Red Cross of the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The event is scheduled for Monday, 31 March (11.00am – 4pm) and Tuesday, 1 April (10:30am-2:30pm), in the Aula Magna of Lugano Campus. All donors need to be in good health and weigh more than 50 kg. Everyone interested must show up with a valid ID and on a full stomach. The procedure will last about 30 minutes.
