| 2013 ACM A.M. TURING AWARD TO LESLIE LAMPORT | | The "Nobel in Informatics" to a USI’s Honorary Doctorate Recipient Leslie Lamport, researcher at Microsoft Research in California, received the Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Informatics in 2006 for “his pioneering contribution to the theoretical foundations of informatics distributed systems". Today he is the recipient
of the 2013 Turing Award, the equivalent of the Nobel in Informatics. It is the
second important recognition conferred to a USI's Honorary Doctor: in 2003 Robert F. Engle was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, soon after receiving the Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Economics. So far, USI has conferred fourteen Ph.D Honoris Causa. >>> | | NEW SERIES OF ENCOUNTERS FOR 'QUI E ORA' | | Honey, Water, Milk, Salt and Bread The theme of this new series of encounters of ten lectures, to be held from March to October, is “Substance of Living”. Professors and researchers of USI’s Institute of Italian Studies will delve into the symbolic and literary value of five common ingredients in our diet. He received the Global Holcim Award Gold (2012), the Marcus Prize (2011), and the BSI Swiss Architectural Award (2010) and the Aga Khan Award (2004). The event is public. >>> | | NEW SPRING LECTURE SERIES AT USI | | "Altr'Arti": eyes on Tibet Altr’Arti is the spring lecture series on art, with the aim of understanding the language of Western art through the comparison with art in cultures outside of Europe. It was first offered in 2006 by the Società Ticinese di Belle Arti. The encounters are presented in

framework of the initiative C@USI, promoted by the TEC-Lab. Tibetologist Ramon N. Prats will hold the first lecture of the series entitled Steady as a Mountain. The event will be held on Tuesday, 25 March at 4pm in the Auditorium (Lugano Campus) preceded by a welcome speech of State Councillor Manuele Bertoli and USI’s President Piero Martinoli. The encounter is part of a three-day event in which students will debate about science, technology and sustainable development in the framework of European Student Parliaments on Science. from
all over Europe, the project aims at strengthening the exchange between students and scientists by illustrating parliamentary procedures in the field of science and research. >>> | | OVER 500 PATIENTS HELPED THANKS TO FORMER BLOOD DRIVES AT USI! | | All we need is Blood: a double chance to donate blood at USI After the first three
successful
blood drives in which 120 litres of blood were collected helping over 500 patients, USI organises two days of blood donation in cooperation with the Transfusion Service of the Red Cross of the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The event is scheduled for Monday, 31 March (11.00am – 4pm) and Tuesday, 1 April (10:30am-2:30pm), in the Aula Magna of Lugano Campus. All donors need to be in good health and weigh more than 50 kg. Everyone interested must show up with a valid ID and on a full stomach.
