Nasce il Centro di Medicina Computazionale in Cardiologia

Il Center for Computational Medicine in Cardiology (CCMC) si colloca all’interno dell’Istituto di scienze computazionali della Facoltà di scienze informatiche e si fonda sulla forte collaborazione interdisciplinare in atto da qualche anno tra il prof. Rolf Krause per l’USI e il prof. dr. med Angelo Auricchio per il Cardiocentro Ticino. La sua missione è favorire lo sviluppo di nuovi approcci computazionali e strumenti applicativi al fine di estendere le conoscenze del sistema cardiocircolatorio, migliorando la diagnosi attraverso l'analisi integrata di più fonti di dati nonché personalizzando l’utilizzo di varie terapie cardiologiche.

Rapide valutazioni etnografiche grazie alle meta-reti

Giovedì 27 febbraio alle 16:30 in aula 253 (campus di Lugano) la prof. Kathleen Carley della Carnegie Mellon University terrà una lezione su come usare il supercalcolo, le meta-reti e l'analisi testuale per fare rapide valutazioni etnografiche. Analizzando grandi quantità di dati - nel caso specifico notizie pubblicate su diversi media online - e interpretandoli grazie a nuovi metodi di visualizzazione è possibile trarre interessanti informazioni sulla cultura in esame. Saranno presentati due casi: l’attacco al Consolato di Bengasi nel settembre del 2012 e la situazione in Birmania nel 2013.

Lezione di architettura di Grafton Architects

Yvonne Farrell e Shelley McNamara, professoresse ordinarie all’Accademia di architettura e fondatrici dello studio Grafton Architects, terranno la loro lectio giovedì 6 marzo 2013, alle ore 19.30, nell’Aula magna del campus di Mendrisio (Palazzo Canavée). L’incontro fa parte anche del ciclo di eventi pubblici Lezioni di architettura, promosso dall’Accademia all’interno della sua intensa offerta culturale con lo scopo di presentare al pubblico, attraverso il racconto del loro operare, architetti di quattro diversi continenti.

Conversare con la "nuova Asia"

La 16° edizione della EMScom Excellence-in-communications Lecture si terrà il 2 aprile a Basilea (Novartis Campus). Bridget Welsh, prof. di scienze politiche alla Singapore Management University, spiegherà ai partecipanti come dialogare in maniera efficace con questa regione in grande crescita, anche alla luce dei profondi cambiamenti in atto. Ingresso ridotto a 100 CHF per studenti e alumni dell'USI, iscrizioni entro il 26 marzo.

Per conoscersi meglio tra musica e parole

Oggi alle 19.30 in aula 354 riprendono le prove dell'associazione studentesca USI Coro: tutti i membri della comunità accademica sono invitati a partecipare, che abbiano o meno esperienza nell'ambito del canto o della musica. Al di là degli obiettivi musicali, infatti, il coro ha come scopo quello di costruire e rafforzare i contatti tra studenti, ricercatori e docenti durante il tempo libero. Per partecipare è sufficiente inviare una mail a usicoro@usi.ch, prendere contatto grazie al gruppo su Facebook o presentarsi direttamente alla prima prova, alla quale seguirà un aperitivo di benvenuto.

Lettera aperta delle Università svizzere al Consiglio federale

Università, Politecnici e Scuole universitarie professionali di tutta la Svizzera, oltre ad Accademie e Fondo nazionale, hanno pubblicato qualche giorno fa una lettera aperta al Consiglio federale dopo la votazione sull'iniziativa contro l'immigrazione di massa. Chiedono che siano prese "tutte le misure possibili" affinché la Svizzera possa essere associata ai programmi dell'UE "Erasmus+" (concernente la mobilità accademica, che comprende quella studentesca) e "Horizon 2020" (futuro programma di ricerca europeo).

Founded the Centre for Computational Medicine in Cardiology

Based on a strong ongoing interdisciplinary cooperation between USI’s prof. Rolf Krause and Cardiocentro’s prof. MD. Angelo Auricchio, the Centre for Computational Cardiology (CCMC) is located in the Institute of Computational Sciences in the Faculty of Informatics. Its mission is to foster the development of new computational approaches and application tools to extend the knowledge of the heart and circulatory system, improving the diagnosis through an integrated analysis of multiple data, and facilitating custom cardiac therapies.

The Power on Meta-Networks for Rapid Ethnographic Assessment

On Thursday, 27 February at 4.30pm in room 253 (Lugano Campus), Professor Kathleen Carley of Carnegie Mellon University will hold a lecture on the use of supercomputing, meta-networks and text analytics with the goal to make rapid ethnographic assessments. The analysis and interpretation of large amounts of data – in this case, news published on different online media such as Twitter - can provide key insight into the underlying cultures. Results for two cases will be presented: the Benghazi Consulate attack in September 2012 and the current state of Myanmar in 2013.

Architecture Lecture by Grafton Architects

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, full professors at the Academy of Architecture and founders of the Grafton Architects studio, will hold their lecture on Thursday, 6 March 2013 from 7.30pm in the Aula magna of Mendrisio Campus (Canavée Building). The encounter is part of a series of public events Lessons in Architecture promoted by the Academy within the framework of its intensive cultural offer. The lectures have the aim of introducing the public to architects from the four different continents through their work.

Getting to know each other through music and words

Rehearsal of the student association USI Choir will resume today at 7.30pm in room 354. All members of the academic community are welcome to participate, regardless of their experience in singing or music. Beyond their musical goal, the choir’s aim is to build and strengthen relationships between students, researchers and faculty during their free time. An open Letter from Swiss Universities to the Federal Council

Universities, institutes of technologies and universities of applied sciences throughout Switzerland including Academies and the Swiss National Science Foundation, have published a few days ago an open letter to the Federal Council after the vote on the popular initiative to stop mass immigration. In the letter they are asking to take "all possible measures" so that Switzerland can be associated with UE Erasmus+ (concerning academic mobility including student’s mobility) and Horizon 2020 (future European research programme).
