now the Politicians' Turn The University Council has approved the Report on a Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. The document has been handed over to Ticino's Consiglio di Stato that will prepare a communication within the next months which will then be discussed in the Gran Consiglio. From an academic point of view, the outlines of the project have been clarified: now, it is up to the political players to evaluate the proposal of the study group. >>> | | INAUGURAL LECTURE | | Informatics: Time Travel & Alternate Universes Prof. Matthias Hauswirth, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Informatics, will hold his inaugural lecture on Informatics: Time Travel & Alternate Universes on Thursday, 17

The lecturing professors are asked to present their disciplines in an easily understandable and broad way. >>> | | ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE LAUNCHES A NEW PUBLIC CONFERENCE SERIES | | Scenography, architecture and the stage The public lecture by Anna Viebrock, one of the most interesting European stage designers, will launch a new series of five conferences fully dedicated to the relationship between architectural practices and scenic art, from the perspective of public theatre’s evolution. Ambassador Manuel Bessler (Vice Director of DSC, delegate for humanitarian aid and head of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit) and Cornelia M. Lenneberg (Regional Vice President for Middle East/Eastern Europe, World Vision International WVI) will deliver speeches. | The worlds, the words The conference will take place today, at 3 pm, in the auditorium (Lugano Campus). It has been organized by ISI and is dedicated to a reflection on both an irremediable distance and an inexhaustible desire, whose poles are formed by literature’s free creativity and by science’s lucid argumentation. Three great modern and contemporary writers, who underwent a scientific and humanistic education, will serve as examples: an astronomer and son of a musician (Galilei), an
engineer who also wrote a thesis in philosophy (Gadda), and a famous chemist and author of
one of Holocaust’s most intense and painful accounts (Levi). >>> | | SWISS FINANCE INSTITUTE | | Why Africa, why now? Africa is open for Business: it is the world’s second-fastest-growing region, topped only by emerging Asia. Yet the continent is a complex market of 54 countries and many thousands of cultural and ethnic groups, which creates considerable challenges. The event Why Africa, why now?, organized by the Swiss Finance Institute in collaboration with the Associazione Bancaria Ticinese, will examine trends, prospects and challenges for the continent, and how to manage the obstacles of investing in emerging African economies. The seminar will be held by Pratibha Thaker, Director of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Africa department, on 22 October, at 6.15 pm, in the auditorium (Lugano Campus). Ticino’s best Athletes who obtain a federal High School Diploma On Monday, 4 November, at 8 pm, at Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano, the Evening of Ticino’s Sport will take place, where the best athletes of Ticino will be elected. In collaboration with Ticino’s Sport Support Office, USI has designed a special award for young elite athletes who have obtained a federal high school diploma in Ticino.
