Approvato il progetto per una nuova Facoltà in scienze biomediche: ora tocca alla politica

Il Consiglio dell’USI ha approvato il Rapporto per una Facoltà di scienze biomediche. Il documento si trova ora all’attenzione del Consiglio di Stato ticinese, che nei prossimi mesi sarà chiamato a preparare un messaggio che dovrà poi essere discusso in Gran Consiglio. I contorni del progetto sono ormai chiari dal punto di vista accademico: nei prossimi mesi toccherà alla politica valutare quanto proposto dal gruppo di studio. >>>

Informatica: viaggi nel tempo e universi alternativi

Il prof. Matthias Hauswirth, professore straordinario della Facoltà di scienze informatiche, terrà la sua lezione inaugurale dal titolo Informatics: Time Travel & Alternate Universes giovedì 17 ottobre alle 17.30 in auditorio (campus di Lugano). Le lezioni inaugurali sono aperte al pubblico e concepite per celebrare ufficialmente l’inizio del cammino all’USI dei nostri nuovi professori, che sono chiamati ad illustrare in maniera divulgativa la propria disciplina. >>>

Scenografia, architettura e spazio scenico

Con la conferenza di Anna Viebrock, tra le più interessanti scenografe del panorama europeo, prende avvio un nuovo ciclo di cinque incontri pubblici interamente dedicati al rapporto tra pratica architettonica e arte scenica nell'ottica dell'evoluzione del teatro pubblico. Come aumentare l’impatto delle operazioni umanitarie sul campo grazie al lavoro svolto alle nostre latitudini? L’incontro di oggi alle 15.00 in auditorio (campus di Lugano) proposto dall'Istituto di studi italiani invita a riflettere nel contempo su un’irrimediabile distanza e su un inesausto desiderio, di cui la creatività libera della letteratura e la limpida argomentazione scientifica rappresentano i poli. Aiuterà l’esempio di tre grandi scrittori dell’età moderna e contemporanea la cui formazione fu insieme scientifica e umanistica: un astronomo figlio di musicista (Galilei), un ingegnere che preparò anche una tesi in filosofia (Gadda), un chimico celebre per una delle più intense e dolenti cronache dell’olocausto (Levi). >>>

Perché l'Africa, perché ora?

L'Africa è aperta al commercio ed è la seconda regione al mondo in termini di velocità di crescita. Tuttavia il continente è un mercato complesso, con 54 paesi e molte migliaia di gruppi culturali ed etnici. Questo crea notevoli sfide. L'evento dal titolo Why Africa, why now?, organizzato dallo Swiss Finance Institute in collaborazione con l'Associazione Bancaria Ticinese, esaminerà le tendenze, le prospettive e le sfide, come anche i modi per gestire gli ostacoli per chi intende investire nelle economie africane emergenti. Il seminario sarà tenuto da Pratibha Thaker, direttore dell'Economist Intelligence Unit’s Africa department, martedì 22 ottobre alle 18:15 in auditorio (campus di Lugano). Un nuovo riconoscimento conferito dall'USI ai migliori sportivi ticinesi che ottengono la maturità federale

Lunedì 4 novembre alle 20.00, al Palazzo dei Congressi di Lugano, si terrà la Serata dello sport ticinese, durante la quale saranno eletti i migliori atleti della Svizzera italiana. In collaborazione con l'Ufficio Aiuto Sport Ticino, il Servizio sport dell'USI ha ideato un riconoscimento speciale per tutti i giovani sportivi d'élite che nel corso dell'anno accademico 2012-13 hanno concluso con successo una maturità federale nella Svizzera italiana. L'associazione studentesca USI MUN (Model United Nations) invita ad una simulazione aperta al pubblico che si terrà mercoledì 16 ottobre alle 17.30 in aula A11 e che darà agli interessati l'opportunità di "scoprire e gestire il diplomatico che è in loro". Grazie a simulazioni realistiche delle attività diplomatiche delle Nazioni Unite, USI MUN offre ai partecipanti la possibilità di acquisire le conoscenze, il linguaggio, le procedure e le competenze necessarie nel mondo della diplomazia.

After Approval of the Project for a new Faculty of Biomedical Sciences it is now the Politicians' Turn

The University Council has approved the Report on a Faculty of Biomedical Sciences. The document has been handed over to Ticino's Consiglio di Stato that will prepare a communication within the next months which will then be discussed in the Gran Consiglio. From an academic point of view, the outlines of the project have been clarified: now, it is up to the political players to evaluate the proposal of the study group. >>>

Local Actions for a global Impact

How can the impact of humanitarian field operations be increased by investing in activities performed on this side of the globe? This question will be discussed at the conference organized by MASHLM with the support of the Fidinam Foundation, on Wednesday, 23 October, at 6pm in the auditorium of Lugano Campus. Ambassador Manuel Bessler (Vice Director of DSC, delegate for humanitarian aid and head of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit) and Cornelia M. Lenneberg (Regional Vice President for Middle East/Eastern Europe, World Vision International WVI) will deliver speeches. The conference will take place today, at 3 pm, in the auditorium (Lugano Campus). It has been organized by ISI and is dedicated to a reflection on both an irremediable distance and an inexhaustible desire, whose poles are formed by literature’s free creativity and by science’s lucid argumentation. Three great modern and contemporary writers, who underwent a scientific and humanistic education, will serve as examples: an astronomer and son of a musician (Galilei), an engineer who also wrote a thesis in philosophy (Gadda), and a famous chemist and author of one of Holocaust’s most intense and painful accounts (Levi). >>>

Africa is open for Business: it is the world’s second-fastest-growing region, topped only by emerging Asia. Yet the continent is a complex market of 54 countries and many thousands of cultural and ethnic groups, which creates considerable challenges. The event Why Africa, why now?, organized by the Swiss Finance Institute in collaboration with the Associazione Bancaria Ticinese, will examine trends, prospects and challenges for the continent, and how to manage the obstacles of investing in emerging African economies. USI gives a new Award to Ticino’s best Athletes who obtain a federal High School Diploma

On Monday, 4 November, at 8 pm, at Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano, the Evening of Ticino’s Sport will take place, where the best athletes of Ticino will be elected. In collaboration with Ticino’s Sport Support Office, USI has designed a special award for young elite athletes who have obtained a federal high school diploma in Ticino. Discover your inner Diplomat

USI's Model United Nations (MUN) student association invites to participate in an "open doors" simulation on Wednesday, 16 October, at 5.30 pm, in room A11, giving them the opportunity "to discover and manage their inner diplomat". Through realistic simulations of UN's diplomatic activities, USI MUN offers participants the chance to acquire the knowledge, the language and the skills necessary for the world of diplomacy.
