Last Friday, the International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods (DD22) ended. At DD22 recent developments in various aspects of domain
decomposition methods were discussed, bringing together mathematicians, computational scientists and engineers. The conference that was hosted by USI thanks to the work of ICS director Prof. Rolf Krause, focused on numerical analysis, scientific and industrial applications, software development and high performance computing. >>> | | CENTER FOR ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL RESEARCH ON AGING (CEPRA) | | Does Retirement improve your Life? This provocative question will be the focus of CEPRA’s public lecture in 2013. The Center aims at fostering research and debates on subjects linked to aging, retirement and health. The lecture will be held in English by Prof. Axel Börsch-Supan, director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Law

appointed President of ETH Zurich The Swiss and Italian citizen Lino Guzzella is currently ETH Rector and Professor of Thermotronics. He will be taking over from the current President, Prof. Ralph Eichler, at the beginning of January 2015. By taking this decision, the Swiss Government has endorsed the unanimous proposal made by the ETH Board. >>>
| | FACULTY OF ECONOMICS | | First Recognitions for the new Humanitarian Operations Research Center (HORC) The new Research Center studies human behaviour and decision-making of practitioners during humanitarian operations, to potentially improve the performance of relief
organizations. The Center, founded in December 2012, is already boasting recognitions for its scientific articles which received awards at two international conferences. >>> | | AN USI INITIATIVE | | Week of Italian Language and Culture launched today in Brig "Conosciamoci" – Let's get to know each other: this will be the main message surrounding the week dedicated to the language and culture of Ticino, which will be hosted at the high school Spiritus Sanctus in Brig, until 27 September, 2013. The heads of the educational departments of the two involved cantons, the State Councillors Oskar Freysinger and Manuele Bertoli, and USI President Prof. Piero Martinoli are going to launch the initiative today at 1 pm. The objective is to foster national multilingualism by bringing Ticino beyond the Nufenen Pass, in order to reinforce the ties unifying our country's different linguistic regions, leaving behind stereotypes and clichés. >>> | | ALSO USI REPRESENTED AT THE SWISS ICT AWARD 2013 | | Among the Finalists is Newscron, a Company supported by USI’s CP Start-up: the online voting is open After the evaluation of an expert jury that selected the finalists, it is now the public’s turn. The start-up with the highest number of votes will be awarded a ticket to Minds100, the
exclusive event at the Swiss Innovation Forum. Newscron is a new application, a news aggregator that aims at solving the problem of information overload. You can vote on the website of the Swiss ICT Award 2013 until 14 October, 2013. >>> | | COMPETITION YOUR CAMPUS&YOU | | 8 Tickets for Lugano Food&Walk up for Grabs All USI students, professors and collaborators are asked to
post, by Tuesday, 8 October, a picture of themselves on one of the two Campuses in Lugano and Mendrisio via USI’s official Facebook and Twitter pages. The authors of the four most creative pictures will be awarded a ticket for two people for Lugano Food&Walk – a “gourmet” walk of 6 kilometres along the most picturesque places of the city, that will take place on 13 October. Each of the tickets has a value of 120 CHF. >>> | | SPORT | | Six of USI’s Freshmen eligible for the ‘SPORT elite’ Programme Three football players and one hockey player from the Faculty of Economics have obtained elite athlete status: Massimo Ronchetti from HC Davos, Ulisse Pelloni from FC Locarno, Davide Riva from FC Chiasso and Tito Tarchini also from FC Chiasso. Ludovico Basso, basketball player from SAM Massagno, and Micol Dardani, a horsewoman, are enrolled at the Faculty of Communication
Sciences instead. These freshmen join football player Antoine Rey from FC Lugano, a 2nd year Master student in Management. The programme enables 'sport elite' students to organize their studies in a more
flexible way, to help them reconcile their student and athlete life. >>> | | USI CHOIR | | Music and Words to get to know each other
The rehearsals of USI's Choir will start again today at 7.30 pm, in room 354: all members of the academic community can participate, no matter if they have singing and music experience or not. In fact, beyond its musical objectives, the choir also aims at building up and reinforcing ties between students, researchers and lecturers during their free time. >>>
| | ENGLISH LANGUAGE CERTIFICATES | | First IELTS exam in Ticino: registration until Saturday
Thanks to a new agreement between the British Council and USI/SUPSI, for the first time it will be possible to take IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams in Ticino. The first exam session will take place on 16 November, 2013, and will be held on the SUPSI Campus in Manno. Registration is possible online: https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/Default.aspx. The deadline for registration is 28 September, 2013. In case of questions and for further information, please contact USI's International Relations and Study-abroad Office that also hands out official brochures.
